TOKYO GEEM TYPEFACE

TOKYO GEEM TYPEFACE

Type Design/ Typography

The project utilizes certain preset bricks on existing grids to develop an alphabet set. The project was bound by many constraints which produced creative room for experimenting.

I. INSPIRATION
The main inspiration for this typeface deprived from the beauty of Tokyo city. Whenever I think about this city, the images of modernity and tradition are harmoniously intertwined. In creating this letter form I wanted to capture that feeling. The three options below show the multiple directions this typeface could be, all with slightly different curvature and feel to it. I decided to go with option B for a more round and geometric letter form to soften the metallic and modern feel of the type.

The letter form is based on the fusion between futuristic features of bold shapes, straight lines, and the subtle curves of handwritten letters.

II. DESIGN ELEMENTS
Using Fontstruct’s existing grid, I wanted use the curvilinear elements to make the letters look softer, yet remain pronounced. First I designed the letters H, O, M, R, A to determine the alphabet's stylistic foundation.

Round edges are seen across the letters to establish a unified look.
The inner dash creates a sense of spatial separation and adds contrast.
Square corners are applied deliberately to create accented difference.

III. APPLICATION
This aims to be a decorative typeface utilizing contrast and heavy lines to emphasize the juxtaposition of negative and positive space. Below are posters to display the use of this typeface.
